  • Our own member, Lt.Gov. Garnet Gracy, presided over the induction of the 1988-89 club officers and directors. President Jud Powell outlined the goals of this administration immediately. Phil Gage is the new editor of the Kiwanigram. Ron Keener's new business responsibilities does not allow him to continue.
  • District Governor Billy T. Smith and his wife were in Division 35 for their official visit on Nov 1. He spoke to us on our 1988-89 Major Emphasis Theme: Achieve by Believing. Lt. Gov. Garnet Gracy introduced our Governor who is from Big Spring, Texas.
  • Mayor Dale Feruson proclaimed Nov. 16 as Abilene Gumball Day. This was in recognition of the fact that Earl Williams presented to President Powell a check for $530.58 which pushes the gumball proceeds over the $100,000 plateau bringing our total to $100,108,18. A drive to secure more machine locations put the total to 1400. Marcus Anderson placed 35 machines in the current drive.
  • Melvin Martin and David Hess organized a Golf Tourmanent at the Abilene Country Club where 50 Kiwanians participated.
  • A donation of $600 was made to Junior Achievement program .
  • Keith Garner raised over $398 from club members for the Annual Turkey Walk for the American Heart Association. Russell Berry is the Abilene Chairman of this event.
  • Vice President Danny Haddox was appointed as chairman of the Scholarship Foundation Committee. This committee is to be responsible for selecting those students to receive scholarship funds from the Kiwanis Club of Abilene Foundation.
  • On January 25 we were sadden to learn that President Jud Powell was leaving Abilene to manage an office of Edward D. Jones & Co. in Shelby, NC.
  • Vice President Danny Haddox was elected to fill the unexpired term vacated by Jud Powell.
  • Ken Poynor, Chairman of the Membership Development Committee organized a Membership drive with a goal to recruit 45 new members.
  • The Annual Valentine Sweetheart Banquet was held on Feb. 11. Dr J. D. Thomas was honored as recipient of the Kiwanian of the Year Award. It was presented by J. C. McCurdy.
  • John Dunn, President Elect, has set a planning committee meeting for this years Pancake Day to be Feb. 16. Ticket sales Kick-off was on March 1. Keith Garner has organized every member into a team to sell tickets. Tickets sell for $2.50. A great experience with every Kiwanian working hard and enjoying it! Gross income $31,997.10
  • The Childrens Miracle Network Telethon received $500 from the Pancake Supper income.
  • Young Amber Jensen came to the club meeting on June 14 to thank us for her myo electric arm. We contributed $500 toward this and her thanks brought tears of joy to he club members.
  • Retired Senior Volunteer Program received our support with a $500 check to help with the Annual Volunteer recognition luncheon.
  • Jim Sayer presented our Club's check in the amount of $1000 to Betty Blazier for the Meals on Wheels program.
  • John E Turner, our faithful news man who attends nearly all of our programs, is playing the tapes of our programs each Sunday morning on radio station KEYJ 7:30 - 8:30.
  • 70 contributions were made to the Kiwanis Club of Abilene Foundation making an increase of $10,000 in the capitol to $40,000.00 and $4,000 was given in scholarships this year.
  • The Kiwanis Club of Abilene sponsored a city wide Fourth of July Celebration at the Wedge in Nelson Park. Senator Phil Gramm was the speaker and was introduced by President Danny Haddox.
  • Jud Powell returned from North Carolina and accepted a Past President's Plaque from Danny Haddox.
  • Mat Casey recruited a large number of Kiwanians to man the ticket sales booths at the West Texas Fair.
